RIM Intros BlackBerry 8820

WATERLOO, Ontario — Research In Motion (RIM) announced today the BlackBerry 8820, the first dual-mode BlackBerry handset, that combines EDGE/GPRS/GSM cellular service with Wi-Fi connectivity for data access and voice support. The new BlackBerry 8820 seamlessly switches between cellular networks and Wi-Fi connections, enabling users to access email, Instant Messaging, organizer, Internet and other mobile applications via Wi-Fi networks in the office, at home and in public hotspots for optimal wireless coverage.

To meet security requirements, the BlackBerry 8820 is compliant with Wi-Fi security protocols, including WEP, WPA, WPA2 and Cisco Compatible Extensions. In addition, the BlackBerry 8820 includes software for several VPN corporate network restrictions.
