Virginia Hospital Picks Airespace
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Airespace Inc.? announced today that Virginia Hospital Center, a comprehensive healthcare facility in Northern Virginia, has implemented the Airespace Wireless Enterprise Platform to deliver mobile voice and data services across its hospital campus and to remote locations. With the Airespace Wireless LAN (WLAN) system, Virginia Hospital Center is able to increase worker productivity through secure wireless mobility, allowing clinicians to spend more time with the patient, thus delivering better patient care.
“Wireless LANs are a critical component for mobile healthcare,” said Mark Rein, Director of Information Technology at Virginia Hospital Center. “By converging voice and data on a single wireless infrastructure, we can streamline day-to-day processes, enhance communications, and reduce potential inaccuracies. At the end of the day, Airespace’s WLAN system enabled our Hospital to better address our patients’ diverse needs.”
The Airespace WLAN at Virginia Hospital Center consists of several hundred Access Points that are centrally managed via Airespace WLAN controllers. The entire wireless network is built as an overlay on top of the Hospital’s existing Cisco Local Area Network (LAN). Airespace Remote Edge Access Points (REAPs) are deployed in remote facilities, enabling the Hospital to extend secure wireless services to these sites via an existing T1 Wide Area Network (WAN). The entire Airespace network is managed centrally using Airespace Control System (ACS) Software. In addition to assisting Virginia Hospital Center with the design and installation of their WLAN, ACS provides templates for configuring system-wide security policies and for monitoring ongoing WLAN activity. It is also integrated with Microsoft’s Operations Manager for alarm collection and event correlation for simplified end-to-end systems management.
Doctors, nurses, and support staff at Virginia Hospital Center are equipped with Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) handsets for real-time voice communications. Airespace’s unique “over-the-air” Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities and real-time RF management software ensures that voice quality always remains excellent, even under heavy traffic load. Specialized mobile applications, such as charting software, are deployed on PDAs and tablet computers to enable secure, reliable access from anywhere in the Hospital’s facilities.
“More and more Hospitals are looking to Information Technology as a way of delivering premier patient care,” said Tom Wilburn, vice president of sales at Airespace. “To that end, Airespace is pleased to be working with leaders in this arena, such as Virginia Hospital Center, to deliver secure and reliable Wireless LAN systems that address even the most stringent healthcare requirements.”
